Ayers Rock, now known by its Aboriginal name of Uluru, is perhaps Australia’s most iconic sight, this imposing red sandstone monolith rising high above the flat desert to a height of 348m. Uluru is at its most atmospheric at sunrise or sunset, when the rock’s colors shift imperceptibly from ochre brown, to burnished orange, to ever deeper reds, before fading to charcoal. Less famous, but equally impressive, are the The Olgas (Kata Tjuta), a group of domed rocks 30km west of Uluru and even taller at 546m.
